The Timeless Craft of Indian Hand Block Printing: Artistry, Heritage & the Chhipa Community
- by Siddharth Kasliwal

The Art: India’s Love for Textile Printing
India has loved art and textiles for centuries. Printed and painted garments appear in ancient Ajanta cave paintings. Many experts agree that hand block printing dates back to the 5th century CE. This art was common in the northwest regions of India.
The Jaipur rulers helped popularize hand block printing. They set up special workshops called Chhapkhanas just for this craft. Sanganer, a village near Jaipur, became the main center for block printing.
The Artist: The Chhipa Community
The artists behind this craft are called Chhipas. They have been creating beautiful prints for hundreds of years. Some say the Chhipas moved from Pandharpur in Maharashtra to Rajasthan. Others believe they came from Gujarat.
The Chhipa community includes both Hindu and Muslim artisans. Hindu Chhipas are divided into two groups, Namdev vanshi and Wamdev vanshi, showing their roots in Pandharpur, the land of Saint Namdev.
There are also stories that Chhipas and Rangaris descend from Kshatriya princes Bhavsingh and Sarsingh. Today, most Chhipas live in Jaipur, Jodhpur, Ajmer, and Bharatpur in Rajasthan.
The Process: Crafting Every Detail
Hand block printing is a careful and detailed process. Artisans carve designs into wooden blocks. Each block holds a different color or pattern. They dip the blocks in natural dyes and press them onto fabric again and again.
A single piece of fabric may be stamped over a thousand times. This creates bright, detailed patterns. Each print shows the skill of the artisan.
Keeping the Tradition Alive
Hand block printing reached its peak during the Mughal era. Royal support helped the craft grow. Even with modern machines, many artisans keep this tradition alive.
Today, hand block printed fabrics are loved worldwide. People value their authentic look and eco-friendly process.
